This project covers a range of concepts (area, perimeter, volume, multiplication, money, design, location and shape).

Students are tasked with designing a zoo. They must complete a range of tasks, for example:

- Create a map of their zoo
- Create nets and construct a 3D model of their zoo
- Find the area, perimeter and volume of each enclosure
- Calculate the cost of building a fence for each enclosure
- Give directions to get around the zoo
- Design a logo, entry ticket and zoo keeper uniform

This is a unit of measurement warm up game that students can do individually, in mixed ability partners/groups, or ability partners/groups.

Students explore measuring their pencil case and items in their pencil case and record their findings.

This can be differentiated in the following ways:

Junior – measure using informal units such as MAB, unifix, hands, dominoes etc

Middle – measure using formal units such as rulers in cm and mm

Senior – measure irregular shaped objects (circumferences etc) using pieces of string that can be put up against a ruler to find total length. Students can also convert between cm and mm and look at decimals.

Variations – you could also you this to explore concepts of perimeter and area.

Students use grid paper to create their own golf course. It can be linked to a variety of different math outcomes, including area and perimeter, shapes, angles, fractions, decimals and percentages.

This is an open ended project that covers concepts multiplication, area and money.

Students are given the task of designing their own café. They work through the stages of the project and based on abilities can vary the complexity of each stage.

Stages include:

– Working out the area of rooms using a given floor plan

– Adding tables/chairs and working out the costs of purchasing these

– Advertising the business in radio, newspaper and commercials and finding the cost of this

– Staffing with cooks and waiters

– Profits that are earned
